Surprising Results for Nuclear Effects in Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions and the MINERνA Neutrino Nucleus Scattering Program

چکیده
Nuclear effects of charged current deep inelastic neutrino-iron scattering have been studied in the frame-work of a χ2 analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs). A set of iron PDFs have been extracted which are then used to compute xB j-dependent and Q2-dependent nuclear correction factors for iron structure functions which are required in global analyses of free nucleon PDFs. Upon comparing our results with nuclear correction factors from neutrino-nucleus scattering models and correction factors for `±-iron scattering we find that, except for very high xB j, our correction factors differ in both shape and magnitude from the correction factors of the models and charged-lepton scattering. The MINERνA neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment at Fermilab, will systematically study neutrino nuclear effects off of He, C, Fe and Pb for a more thorough A-dependent study of nuclear PDFs and these correction factors.

Experimental status of neutrino scattering physics and needed measurements
Knowledge of neutrino interactions with a nuclear target at the neutrino energy around sub-GeV is recently getting more and more important as necessary information for accelerator based neutrino oscillation experiments. A study of neutrino interactions contains rich physics of neutrinos with nucleus, and is used to reveal the properties of neutrinos in the oscillation measurements. We review th...
متن کاملNuclear effects in neutrino-nucleus DIS
We explain the current status of nuclear parton distribution functions in connection with neutrino-nucleus interactions. Neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) measurements have been done for heavy nuclear targets such as iron and lead. In order to extract structure functions of the nucleon, one needs to remove nuclear effects from the data. However, recent studies indicate that there are inc...
متن کاملMINERνA: a dedicated neutrino scattering experiment at NuMI
MINERνA is a dedicated neutrino cross-section experiment planned for the NuMI beamline at Fermilab [1]. The advent of high rate neutrino beamlines designed for studies of long-baseline neutrino oscillation at the atmospheric δm, such NuMI, CNGS and J-PARC ν, opens up new potential for high rate neutrino cross-section measurements. Among those beamlines, NuMI provides the optimal combination of ...

An overview of neutrino-nucleus interactions is presented. After a brief discussion of theory and applications of detector response three examples are discussed: i) Recent work on neutrino-deuteron reactions, ii) Probing strangeness content of the nucleon with neutrinos, and iii) The role of neutrino reactions in supernova dynamics and r-process nucleosynthesis. Recent observations of solar 1),...
متن کاملHadron Multiplicity in Semi-Inclusive Lepton-Nucleon and Lepton-Nucleus Scattering
We discuss multi-hadron production in both inelastic neutrino-nucleon interactions in the current fragmentation region and neutrino-nucleus collisions in the target fragmentation region. Our analysis, carried out within the framework of the quark-gluon string model, is mainly focused on the difference between these two processes. We show that the Q dependence of hadron multiplicity in the curre...
